April 16, 2005 on the island of Grande Comore, the Karthala volcano wakes up after 14 years of sleep. The consequences of this are catastrophic eruption: water well and part of the island are overgrown with ash.

The Laboratory of Earth Sciences of the University of Reunion Island, in collaboration with the Observatory of Karthala Volcanological, implement scientific missions to understand the operation of this volcano and prevent breakouts.

16 avril 2005 sur l'île de Grande Comores, le volcan Karthala se réveille après 14 ans de sommeil. Les conséquences de cette éruption sont catastrophiques : les puits d'eau et une partie de l'île sont envahis par la cendre.

Le Laboratoire des Sciences de la Terre de l'Université de La Réunion, en collaboration avec l'Observatoire Volcanologique du Karthala, mettent en place des missions scientifiques pour comprendre le fonctionnement de ce volcan et d'en prévenir les éruptions.

El Laboratorio de Ciencias de la Tierra de la Universidad de La Reunión, en colaboración con el Observatorio Vulcanológico de Karthala, implementar misiones científicas para entender el funcionamiento de este volcán y prevenir brotes de acné.

Le projet Run Sea Science, financé par l’Union Européenne et mis en œuvre par l’IRD s’est appuyé sur quatre activités principales : amélioration des capacités matérielles, amélioration des capacités humaines, échanges d’expériences avec création d’un réseau de chercheurs et participation au réseau de recherche à travers l’organisation d’un séminaire sur l’Aquaculture et l’organisation du 6ème congrès WIOMSA.

Ce film documentaire montre les quatre axes principaux de recherche développés par les partenaires de RUN Sea Science, de l’étude de la biodiversité à travers la génétique et la conservation de la biodiversité à l’aquaculture en passant par l’étude du comportement grâce à la méthode de marquage et l’acidification des océans sous surveillance. Actions de terrain, échantillonnage, travail en laboratoire, analyse des résultats, les activités des chercheurs se succèdent sur les côtes réunionnaises et dans les centres de recherche partenaires.

Ce projet, particulièrement original dans sa conception, aura permis de démontrer que les équipes de recherche publiques et privées liées au monde marin à la Réunion travaillent ensemble. Mieux, que leur coopération sur les nombreux thèmes de recherche développés avec le soutien de RUN Sea Science apportait un plus indéniable à l’avancée des travaux.

En améliorant les capacités matérielles et humaines des établissements de recherche de La Réunion, en diffusant leurs travaux et en créant un réseau de chercheurs océan Indien et Europe, le projet RUN Sea Science aura démontré l’importance de la mise en place du Pôle Régional Mer à La Réunion.

Classed vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the marine turtles represent one of the emblematic species of a declining worldwide bio diversity.

They constitute a major priority in terms of sustainable development of the natural resources of the regions that hold them.

Their preservation depends upon our comprehension of their way of life and their needs, whether this be in terms of space or feeding resources.

In the framework of her PhD at the Reunion Island University, Katia Ballorian takes us with her and the NCSR laboratories in Strasbourg, to the sloping coral reefs of Reunion Island. Her mission is to complete the still rather fragmented knowledge on the feeding behavior of the Green Turtles living along the coastline of Reunion Island.

Katia will be helped in her project by researchers, students and technicians of the IPHC of the NCSR in Strasbourg, as well as by; Kélonia, IFREMER, the laboratory of Marine Ecology of Reunion Island University and the Marine Reserve.
